I have an '86 Savage and it has a cartrige type filter located on the left side of the bike, if you look at the left side you will see a triangular cover with three allen head bolts holding it on. When you unlossen the last bolt be careful because it pops right out. But, before you take the cover off be sure to take the drain plug out and give a few miniutes to drain. The drain plug is located underneath the right side of the bike. It is a large bolt on the lowest part of the motor. You have to use an open end wrench because it is headed out of the motor sideways toward the right side of the bike. Now, to get my oil to drain totally I have to stand my Savage up and hold it for a few miniutes. Then I'm ready to put everthing back on, and mine takes 2 1/2 to 3 quarts of oil with a filter change. I have not changed the oil without the filter yet so I don't know but my guess would be 2 quarts????
